PSD Monitors International Field Trips

March 22, 2016 - In light of recent terrorist attacks in Belgium, Parkland School Division continues to monitor developing international events and travel conditions. Three Parkland School Division schools have students and staff currently participating in international trips.  The countries they are traveling to include Italy, Germany, the Czech Republic, Scotland, Ireland as well as a stop-over at the International Airport in London.

Travel advisories have and will be checked on a daily basis and Parkland School Division is in direct communication with teachers on the trips as well as with the travel companies the schools have contracted.  Advisories have not changed since they were re-evaluated in mid-January prior to our students’ departure and no alternate plans are being made at this time.

As previously communicated with parents, final decisions on individual trips will be made consulting the federal government’s travel advice, advisories issued by destination countries, travel and insurance experts and with input from parents, guardians and Parkland School Division staff.

As outlined in Parkland School Division’s Administrative Procedure 260, the Superintendent may cancel or interrupt any approved off-site activity at any time up to the point of return from that activity where the Superintendent considers the safety and well being of students and supervisors to be at unusual risk, real or potential, due to emergent circumstances. Such a decision will consider any emergent change in social, political, health, legal or physical environment that may have created risk(s) greater than that which existed when the offsite activity was originally given approval.

At Parkland School Division, we are always guided by what's in the best interest of our students.  Should conditions change to the point where students must come back prior to their scheduled return-trip, Parkland School Division would make arrangements with the travel companies for an early return.

Parents and guardians were asked to re-sign consent forms in January of 2016, allowing them the opportunity to either reconsider or recommit.
